About Me
Dr. Camila Caceres is a marine biologist, shark scientist, fisheries researcher and educator. She received a degree in Biology (BSc) from Duke University in 2012 and was first introduced to fisheries research when she was a research assistant at Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station. She then completed her masters and doctoral studies in the Heithaus Lab at Florida International University.
Camila published a shark science textbook with MISS as a co-editor and co-author, has met with Colombia’s Vice-President to discuss marine research, has been featured in The Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and Telemundo media among others, and has won multiple scientific awards.
I am a biologist, an ecologist, a shark researcher, a female scientist. I am Colombian, I am Argentinian and I am American. A writer and an artist, I have my feet in the ground but my head in the clouds. I am a dreamer, an idealist and a surrealist. I am a conservationist, and an activist. I fight for the rights to learn and communicate science, for the rights to have clean air and water, for the rights to a healthy ocean and a healthy planet.
I fight for animal rights and human rights.
EDUCATION
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Elasmobranchs
Elasmobranchs are sharks and rays, and I'm interested in learning about their populations, the role they play in coral reefs, how to fish them sustainably, and the best way to protect and conserve them.

Fisheries
I'm investigating how small-scale, artisanal and sustenance fisheries affect our ocean ecosystems and the human populations that depend on them.
Behavior
I'm fascinated with both human and animal behavior. From the way humans fish, buy and eat seafood, to the way elasmobranchs migrate, eat and reproduce, I want to know how and why organisms act they way they do.
